JB Returns with the Torana SL/R 5000 – Brian Boyd

Brian said the series made a welcome return with a strong field for round six of the championship with John Bowe in his Torana SL/R 5000 holding a slender lead over Steve Johnson.

"JB was quick straight off the transporter and his fastest time in the sole practice session on Friday was shaping up to be a good weekend for him.

"However, Steve Johnson had other ideas and in the qualifying session that followed late in the day, Steve set a new lap record that was previously held by John, who had to be content with 3rd fastest," Brian reported.

Weekend Battle Between JB and Steve Johnson – Brian Boyd

"Race one on Saturday morning was the usual reverse Trophy race and the win went to Dean Lillie in his debuted Holden Monaro GTS. With the race over a shortened three laps, JB was never going to pull off one of his famous charges through the field.

"Race two on Saturday was a runaway win for Johnson, who set another lap record time in a rain-affected event that saw JB spin out on the slippery track and finish near the tail end of the field, Brian added.

"Race three was a temporary win for Johnson before the race was declared 'no race' due to the heavy crash soon after the start and the need to carry out substantial repairs to a section of fence.

A Decisive Weekend for Steve Johnson – Brian Boyd

"Race four resulted in another convincing win for Johnson after never being headed. John Bowe turned up the wick on the #18 Torana with a classic charge that took him from 21st to 11th in just the first lap.

"He continued to pick off cars as the race progressed and at the chequered flag he was 3rd across the line in what was up to then a disappointing couple of races.

"As a result of Johnson's two wins he takes over the lead in the championship from John Bowe by 55 points with two rounds to go, including Bathurst next on the calendar," Brian said.
